Change coming for Sask. doctors: President of Sask. Medical Association

Sep 14, 2017 | 11:22 AM

It’s a time of flux for physicians in the province.

Saskatchewan Medical Association (SMA) president, and local Prince Albert obstetrician and gynecologist Dr. Joanne Sivertson is touring the province to hear from local physicians.

Sivertson said doctors across the province are receiving updates on a weekly basis regarding the upcoming amalgamation of the 12 health regions in Saskatchewan.

“A lot of it’s still up in the air, because they’ve just named the CEO of the single health region, and a lot of these decisions are going to be made now there’s a board in place,” Sivertson said. “What the transition team has been recommending has been very thoughtful and very intentional and we’re optimistic.”

Sivertson said physicians in Saskatchewan have seen health regions amalgamated in neighbouring Alberta and on the East coast in Nova Scotia. She said there’s been bumps along the road, but doctors are mostly concerned about practicing “optimal care” close to home.

“As far as physicians are concerned, they’re mostly worried about making sure that their patients aren’t affected by the changes that are going down,” Sivertson said.

She said physicians need to operate under a new system to see if it works for them or not.

The SMA is also negotiating with the provincial government around a potential 3.5 per cent cut, as are other public sector groups.

Sivertson said recent changes to economic and political environments from Brad Wall’s retirement to a new federal tax plan also have an effect.

“We’re definitely working within an ever fluctuating environment at this moment,” Sivertson said. “We think this is a good opportunity to try and make sure whatever we design for the next three to five years… will be able to be flexible and to be able to be in line with whatever changes are coming our way.”

Sivertson said her tour is headed off to Saskatoon, Yorkton, Regina and Swift Current among other regions in Saskatchewan.
