Mintos’ season ends in double OT heartbreaker

Mar 14, 2017 | 11:06 PM

With a flick of the wrist from the blueline, the Prince Albert Mintos’ 2016-17 campaign was cut short.

Evan Simpson scored 13 minutes into the second overtime as the Tisdale Trojans eliminated the Mintos with a 5-4 win Tuesday in Tisdale. The Trojans won the series in four games, and advance to the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League finals to take on the Regina Pat Canadians.

Mintos’ rookie Logan Barlage scored the 4-3 go-ahead goal with seven minutes remaining in the third period, but Trojans’ Jordan Simoneau tied the game with 31 seconds left to force OT.

Barlage, a Swift Current Broncos prospect, finished the season with 37 goals and 76 points in all 44 regular season games, five goals in eight points in as many playoff games. Barlage also won four league awards including League MVP, Top Forward, Rookie of the Year and First Team All-Star.

The Mintos were dealt with losing their top goal scorer in Kyrell Sopotyk, who was suspended for the series after a check from behind major penalty in Game 1. Braden Schneider was also forced to sit out the rest of the series after a checking to the head major penalty in Game 2.

Trojans forward Luc Marleau, a Prince Albert Raiders’ prospect, had three assists in the series.
