A new adventure for Meath Park students

Following a fire at their school, Meath Park School students are embracing change in their school routine.

The older students attend Carlton Comprehensive High School, while the kindergarten to Grade 4 students are at Spruce Home Public School.

Meath Park vice-principal Dejan Letkeman said staff framed the students’ stay as an adventure.

“Like all adventures, they come to an end but the most important thing is what you do along the way,” he said. “Having fun, meeting new people and having new experiences.”

He said students will refer to their days as adventures and have wholeheartedly embraced the concept.

Spruce Home principal Joanne Tournier said the stay also teaches students to be flexible.

There wasn’t enough classroom space to accommodate the Meath Park students, so one class is using the stage for their lessons.

“They’ve learned to go with the flow and they’re making it work,” she said.

The incoming students doubled Spruce Home’s population.

Tournier said having so many new students and teachers could have been an issue, but they’ve managed to avoid any major conflict.

“We’ve turned something that could be very negative and traumatic into a positive learning experience,” she said.

It’s expected Meath Park students will return to their school in a few weeks, though it depends on the damage sustained by the school.
