Meath Park students settle in at Carlton Comprehensive

Oct 26, 2016 | 2:06 PM

After a fire broke out in their school, Meath Park students and teachers have found themselves a new home.

The 190 students, from Grades 9 through 12, currently occupy 11 classrooms in the east wing of Carlton Comprehensive High School.

Meath Park School principal Tom Hazzard said their transition has gone as smooth as possible.

“It’s as close to normal as we can do. We’re calling it an operating Meath Park School within a school,” he said.

Carlton Comprehensive is one of the largest high schools in the province and has advanced classroom technology students don’t have in Meath Park, Hazzard said, like expanded facilities including a pool, larger library and full fitness centre.

Given the quick evacuation, Meath Park English teacher Chris Phalen said he didn’t bring the necessary resources to teach his units for several weeks, but everything he’ll need is at Carlton.

“Everything keeps on going,” he said. “We’re all learning from each other and being here will definitely give me an opportunity to grow.”

Projects students were working on are all saved to a Sask. Rivers Public School Division server, which Phalen said means students didn’t lose any work. They’ll be able to pick up right where they left off when they return to Meath Park School.

Students have only been at Carlton for a day, but Phalen said the new students have been generously welcomed with ‘Welcome Meath Park students’ signs posted across the school.

They’re scheduled to stay at Carlton for up to three weeks, but the option to stay longer is available depending on the state of their school.
