UPDATE: Precautionary water advisory lifted for Melfort

Jul 26, 2016 | 5:38 PM

UPDATE: Melfort is no longer under a precautionary water advisory.

SaskWater said it has successfully treated the reservoir water which was Melfort’s secondary water source. The water now meets regulatory standards and is safe to drink.

Conservation restrictions are still in effect, and all non-essential water use such as the watering of parks and lawns is suspended until further notice.

The advisory was in effect for Melfort, the Melfort Rural Pipeline Assocation, Beatty, Kinistino, Star City and Weldon.

The City of Melfort took a creative approach to making sure residents have clean water to drink.

A tanker truck which can hold about 1,500 gallons of potable water was be in the city hall parking lot, providing free water to assist while the drinking advisory was in effect.

“People will be out to bring containers and fill them up at city hall free of charge,” mayor Rick Lang said. “We are limiting it to 20-litre containers or smaller.”

The advisory had been issued due to anticipated issues with higher than permissible turbidity levels as well as a reduction in the taste and odour quality of the secondary source water.

Lang said the city decided to draw water from the Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Administration dam as a secondary water source after the intake to the water treatment plant that comes from the Codette Lake was shut off, July 25.

“That water is going to be directed to the water treatment plant. It will be treated and then it will be released to the public,” he said. “The water is fine to use for other uses such as washing clothes or having showers but if you want to ingest it, make sure it is boiled for at least a minute.”

Compared to other cities, Lang said Melfort will not experience any shortage of water due to its alternative plans as well as solutions set up to the drinking water situation.
