Old school in Young, Sask. goes up for auction

Mar 22, 2016 | 12:06 PM

When searching for a good deal on a piece of property, it’s not every day you come across an old school.

McLellan School in Young, Saskatchewan, boasting 36,000 sq. ft. has been posted on the McDougall Auctioneers website.

Auctioneer Terry McDougall said there could be many uses for it. “It could be used as a community type of centre, it could be used as a training centre or you could make into transition housing,” he said.

McClellan school was decommissioned in 2013. The school was built in four stages, dating back to 1953. Construction was completed in 1983.

There is a large gym area and all the floors still look as though they have never been stepped on.

The owners are asking $360,000 but the highest bid as of Tuesday afternoon was $155,000.

“It’s not a final sale. We submit the high bid and then the owners have an opportunity to accept that high bid,” McDougall said.

The bidding process closes Mar. 31.

McDougall said is very rare to auction off an old school, especially one in this good of shape.

Currently there is only one listing on the McDougall website for an old school building.

The Village of Young is located in central Saskatchewan, northwest of Watrous.
