Sask. band looking for music video extras at P.A. show

Mar 13, 2016 | 12:13 PM

Saskatoon band Penny Reign will be making a stop in Prince Albert.

Band member Gary Ostafichuk said they will be perform a free, all-ages concert at the E.A. Rawlinson Center on Friday March 18.

He said the concert will be a CD release party for their long awaited album Weird, and a chance to shoot a local music video.

“We’re actually doing a video shoot as well. We’re really hoping that people will come out and have a chance to be in a shoot for our single ‘Castaway,’ which will likely have national recognition. We’ve hired a radio tracker and a publicity team to help promote it, so we hoping people want to be a part of a music video,” he said.

Penny Reign is a high energy act and play a lot of radio friendly rock songs.

“It’ll be a fun evening,” Ostafichuk said.

On top of performing in Prince Albert this month, Ostafichuk also co-produced a “Lean on Me” rendition that was done as a tribute for the community of La Loche after a tragic shooting left four dead in January.

“I was contacted by the group and they had already shot their video just with an iPhone and wanted to have it professionally recorded. So along with my friend and co-producer Marty Ballantyne, we were approached and asked to record it so we did,” he explained.

“We actually recorded it and shot a video for that at St. Andrew’s Church at the same time, which was a new experience to shoot that all live on location and record it live as well. It turned out really well and everybody gave it a resounding response.”

On top of that Penny Reign recently won a Battle of the Bands in Saskatoon, playing for free at the Rock for Dimes event at Piggy’s Bar & Grill.

The event raised money for the March of Dimes campaign, sponsored by the United Way.

“We wanted to be part of it. We played for free for that show as well because we wanted to help raise some money for that cause,” he said.

Raising money for charity is something that’s important to Penny Reign.

“We’ve performed at Telemiracle a couple of years ago, we’re always happy to help give something back to the community. People come out and support us and our music so we want to try to give back where we can,” Ostafichuk said.

When it comes to the CD release party on March 18, Ostafichuk said the new album is in large part thanks to funding received through the Rawlco Radio 10K20 project, which sees Saskatchewan artists receive $10,000 to put towards their art.

“I would really love it if the people of P.A. would come out and be part of our video, we want to put as many people in the seats as possible. It’s a free show, we’re pretty entertaining, or so I’ve been told,” he said.

The concert and video shoot starts at 7 p.m. on March 18 at the E.A. Rawlinson Center.
