Roughriders give lesson about roughhousing and bullying

Students at Arthur Pechey Elementary School  got a lesson on bullying Tuesday morning from some local celebrities.

Roughriders Dan Clark and Levi Steinhauer dropped by the school to discuss the issue of bullying and the importance of preventing it. They also shared a few personal experiences about being bullied.

Dejan Letkeman, vice principal at Arthur Pechey School said they were very excited to get the opportunity to have Clark and Steinhauer come to the school.

“It is something that we are constantly talking to our kids about in terms of virtues in the ways that our kids care for one another,” he said.

“We consider ourselves a caring community here at Arthur Pechey and so the topic of how we treat one another and how we speak to one another is always a part of our conversation piece and the language that we use with our kids.”

Steinhauer said he hopes their stories can help students realize how important it is to prevent and stop bullying.

“It’s good to get out there at a young age, and for them to hear these kind of things and understand that it is not just them,” he said.

“We’re professional athletes and we have experienced bullying, and maybe to this day we are experiencing some of these things, so I think that shows them the reality of bullying. It’s  good to try and eliminate it, and get rid of it at this age.”

Since 2010, several Rider players have been trained by the Red Cross to deliver bullying presentations to Saskatchewan youth.

Last year the Imagine No Bullying presentations presented by the Riders managed to reach over 20,000 kids.

Clark said this is the second year he’s teamed up with the Red Cross to deliver the message. He presented at roughly 24 schools last year and is looking forward to visiting new schools, sharing his story and spreading the anti-bullying message once again this year.

“I really enjoy it, it’s awesome,” he said. “If I can change one kids life while I am here that is all that counts.”
