Raiders GM Hunt talks about acquiring Olynek

The Prince Albert Raiders needed some forward depth and they found it on Monday.

They acquired 1996-born forward Kolten Olynek from the Spokane Chiefs in exchange for a conditional ninth round pick. The move now gives the Raiders 13 forwards and 22 total players on their current active roster.

Olynek was a high pick of the Lethbridge Hurricanes, who selected him in the second round, 26th overall of the 2011 WHL Bantam Draft. But thus far, Olynek hasn’t produced to that level. He has scored 31 points in his 140-game career with the Hurricanes, the Moose Jaw Warriors and the Spokane Chiefs. But Raiders general manager Curtis Hunt believes that Olynek has still some untapped potential.

“He hasn’t at this point reached expectations of himself or his teams. We are his fourth team but we know he can get up and down the ice real well,” said Hunt. “We know he’s got a high level of skill and we know he’s going to come in and compete.

“He’s got some experience now and he’s got some quickness and that ability to score.”

Olynek, who hails from Saskatoon, was a monster in minor hockey. He won the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League Most Valuable Player award in the 2012-2013 season with the Saskatoon Contacts. The Contacts got to the Telus Cup that year, where Olynek was named as the tournament’s top forward. Olynek had 119 points in 80 games spread across two seasons with the Contacts and was teammates with three current Raiders, Reid Gardiner, Austin Glover and Rylan Parenteau.

“If he can find that touch that he had as a midget, that’d be a great thing,” said Hunt. I think he’s coming into a situation where he’ll feel comfortable because of the some of the teammates he’s had in the past and the success they’ve had together. I just felt right now, on a couple levels, we could use some secondary scoring maybe.
