Prince Albert welcomes new judge

The Prince Albert Provincial Court is welcoming a new judge.

The Government of Saskatchewan has announced the appointment of Steven Schiefner to the city’s provincial court.

“Over the past 20 years, Judge Schiefner has demonstrated a dedication to public service and the practice of law,” Justice Minister and Attorney General Gordon Wyant said in a release. “His education, professional experience and community involvement make him an outstanding judicial appointment.”

Judge Schiefner was admitted to the bar in 1994 after graduated from the College of Law at the University of Saskatchewan.

He has worked not only in private practice, but he’s also worked in the public sector.

He spent several years as the City Solicitor for Moose Jaw and in 2008 he was appointed as the vice-chairperson of the Saskatchewan Labor Relations Board.

“I’ve been involved in adjudicating cases, many cases, although it has all been in a labour context.  It has given me an opportunity to focus on making sure people get a chance to be heard,” Schiefner said.

Some say the introduction of the Gladue Report, which orders judges to consider an aboriginal accused background before making a decision, has posed a new challenge for judges across the country.

Personally, Schiefner said he does’nt believe his job has been altered by the report.

“Judges have always had to be sensitive to the life circumstances of the people appearing before them, it’s the same obligation as before just maybe a bit more focused now,” he said.

Over his career, Shiefner has been actively involved in the communities where he has worked.

He has worked for the Moose Jaw Cultural Centre, and he was vice-chairperson for the Moose Jaw Museum and Art Gallery.  He has also been a volunteer relief worker with the Canadian Red Cross and a board member of the Regina Beach Yacht Club.

Schiefner will move to Prince Albert with his wife and nine-month-old son Ethan.  He also has two older children.
