SPCA in search for new executive director

Nov 5, 2015 | 11:19 AM

A change in leadership coming for the Prince Albert SPCA.

John Morash’s contract as executive director expires in January 2016, and he has informed the board of directors he will not be renewing it.

“I wanted to give plenty of notice that I’m moving on to a new career, I’ve been offered an opportunity which I’ve been interested in for quite some time,” said Morash.

Morash would not disclose what his new job will be, saying only that he will be staying in Prince Albert.

He has been with the SPCA for nearly 10 months, and has been responsible for a great deal of change at the shelter, implementing 80 new policies and procedures recommended by Humane Society Management Services.

Some of those policy challenges have been met with criticism from former employees and volunteers. Morash said the backlash had nothing to do with his decision to leave.

“You know I’m going to miss the animals, I’m going to miss the people,” he said. “Now the organization is in a much stronger position than it was before and I just wish them all the best.”

Reflecting back on the past year, Morash said he was proud of the work that he was able to get done.

“Working on things like getting our euthanasia policy in place, where we were able to reduce euthanasia by 46 per cent, and working on our micro-chipping, getting our micro-chipping up past 150 per cent over the previous year,” he said.

Morash said he was also very proud of the work SPCA staff was able to do this past summer, rescuing animals from the wildfire regions.

Moving forward, Morash still has some unfinished work to do get done before he leaves.  He said there are budgets to finalize as well as negotiations with neighbouring rural municipalities.

SPCA Board President Joleen McCullagh could not be reached for comment.

paNOW has been told she is away in Vancouver and won’t be back in her office until next week.

Debbie Lehner, long time executive director of the Prince Albert SPCA, resigned as of Nov. 30, 2014. For a brief five days, Dave Young filled the position but was replaced by Morash in January 2015.
