Raiders’ GM Hunt relieved to get McBride deal done

Prince Albert Raiders general manager Curtis Hunt leaned against the Art Hauser Centre with a sense of relief on his face, despite the fact his team was about to take on the Calgary Hitmen in a short few hours.

That relief came from the fact Hunt was finally able to find a suitor for goaltender Nick McBride, who officially left the team on Oct. 1 after previously requesting a trade. The Raiders sent him to the Prince George Cougars for a second round pick in the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft.

“It’s been six weeks almost. In the end, enough’s enough,” said Hunt. “There was lots of interest, but more tire-kickers than anything else. Really, you start this process looking at the group you have. It’s early in the year, you’re not really sure where you’re going but I had an idea. Based on our scouts and our coaching staff and what we’d like to do.:

“At a certain point in time, that person that comes in, if a person comes in, he has to fit your dynamic. In the end, we feel the deal is a fair deal based on the fact Nick hasn’t played but certainly has potential. He hasn’t really proven it to this point but he’s had some hot segments.”

The Raiders received a second round draft pick and no plug-and-play players in the deal. That’s curious on the surface, considering the Raiders only have 12 forwards (no reserves) and seven defencemen (one reserve) on their current roster, have been ranked in the CHL Top 10 for the past three weeks and came into Wednesday tied for the WHL lead in points with 24.

Hunt did leave the door open to making a move in the future, with that second round pick or not, but is cautious to not disrupt the team dynamic and the energy they’ve started the year with.

“I’m not going to mess that up, just yet,” said Hunt. “Anytime you add to your lineup, you’ve always got to think and wonder of the chemistry and how that person’s going to fit. I think there’s a lot of great players in our league and we’ve seen some transactions this year with some high end guys… we weren’t in a position, I didn’t believe, to go there now. I like our 20’s so didn’t want to go there and to get a 19 or an 18—I just wanted to be sure.”

The deal moves him into his home province, as he hails from Maple Ridge, B.C. McBride had a record of 25-25-1-2, a 3.22 goals-against average, .900 save percentage and two shutouts through two seasons with the Raiders. Hunt added that he believes the Cougars will be a good fit for McBride, especially considering McBride and Cougars general manager Todd Harkins are previously connected with the Burnaby Winter Club.

McBride was drafted 23rd overall by the Raiders in the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft, the second goaltender taken that year behind only Patrick Dea of the Edmonton Oil Kings. McBride pitched a half-game shutout in the CHL Top Prospects Game and was named the WHL Scholastic Player of the Year last season. McBride also won a silver medal with Team Canada at the Under-17 World Hockey Challenge.
