NDP win stands after Desnethé-Missinippi-Churchill River recount

Nov 3, 2015 | 4:23 PM

The NDP’s Georgina Jolibois’ win in the Desnethé-Missinippi-Churchill River riding stands after a judicial recount was completed on Tuesday.

On election night, Jolibois won with just 71 votes over Liberal Lawrence Joseph. The recount now shows a difference of 82.

According to Elections Canada, an automatic recount would occur if there was a gap of .001 between votes. In this instance, that would mean a difference of 30 votes or less.

With 70 votes between the two parties, a recount was requested by the Liberal Party.

Joseph was critical of the voting process claiming some polling stations ran out of ballots. However, Elections Canada has since disputed those claims.

Elections Canada confirmed the recount on Oct. 30.

Jolibois said she was never once worried that the results would go the other way. She said she is happy that she can now move forward.

“I want to thank the volunteers, the supporters and the voters for trusting me and helping me win the election. Thank you very much,” she said.

Final count

Georgina Jolibois (NDP) – 10,319

Lawrence Joseph (Liberal) – 10,237

Rob Clarke (Conservative) – 9,105

Warren Koch (Green) – 552
