Crusader girls volleyball team ready for city finals

Nov 3, 2015 | 11:12 AM

The Carlton Crusaders senior A girls volleyball team hopes their recent gold medal win in North Battleford will carry over against the St. Mary Marauders in the city finals.

Coach Tara Peet has seen a great improvement throughout the year and wants to build on that moving forward.

“With the last part of the season coming up right now, we are really looking forward to doing well at regionals and hopefully getting a spot to go to provincials and doing well there as well,” said Peet.

Grade 12 student Aadyn Oleksyn, who has been on the team since Grade 9, sees their chemistry leading to their success on the court.

“The key to our team being successful is the amount of time we spend together on and off the court,” said Oleksyn. “We really get to know each other and it creates a good team dynamic.

“Being so close as a team lets us have a lot of fun and work hard at the same time.”

Peet said the biggest difference between the city final and any other game is the atmosphere of the crowd.

“The city finals are a lot of noise, a lot of pressure, and in front of the home crowd,” said Peet. “All the kids come out to it and it is just a ton of fun, but being someone on the court it is nerve racking.”

Grade 12 student Kalli Cowles said since her first city final in Grade 9, she has gained confidence as an athlete.

“In the previous years going into the city finals, I was definitely nervous because of the big crowd, but this year I’m excited to play,” she said. “It’s the seniors’ last city final so we might as well make it a game to remember.”

Carlton takes on St. Mary at Carlton Nov. 3 at 5 p.m.
