New class at Carlton leaves students in stitches

Carlton Comprehensive Public High School has opened up a new elective for students this year.

Mrs. Hatley, a teacher at the High School is teaching Clothing and Textiles 30, a course where you learn how to sew articles of clothing, thread a sewing machine and the proper sewing terminology.

“It has taken three years for this elective to get on the time table, as a choice, and to have kids get excited to take this course,” said Hatley.

Marco Balych, a student in her class who already has some knowledge about sewing, said he wanted to take the new Clothing and Textiles 30 class to help improve his skill, and learn how to do many other things.

“I find an interest in sewing, and creating things. I just thought it would be so cute to create my own clothes, and other things.” said Balych. “It’s also a great life skill to know, or you could make your own clothes to fit you better in the future.”

As of right now, the students in Hatley’s class are sewing flannel pajama pants as one of their first major assignments.

Another student, Hart Agrey, who is familiar with sewing pajama bottoms is excited to be making a new pair for this school year.

“I made a pair of pajama pants in grade eight and they were fantastic, but a hole was ripped and every time I tried to sew it back, it would keep ripping.” said Agrey.

Both of the students are also excited to develop more skill and knowledge within this class to learn how to make interesting things on Pinterest.

Hatley hopes more students will be interested in taking the 30 level class, although no prerequisites are needed for the future.
