Tipi raised at Carlton

Carlton Comprehensive Public High School has a proud tradition.

On Tuesday, Oct. 6, the annual raising of a tipi was held.

Elder Howard Walker was the honorary speaker at the ceremony.

“The students have an opportunity to be the best that they can be at whatever it is they want, or what their goals are,” said Walker. “I speak of many people and their success but also of their humble beginnings.”

“But sometimes our people sell themselves short and say they can never be like that, but we can,” he added.”

Walker was invited to school administration to talk to the students.  Walker told the students that there are two sides to our world.

“The traditional side and also the contemporary side, and how we can close that gap because there is a gap inbetween and sometimes we have a tendency to not do anything about it, as we wait for someone to do it for us,” Walker said.

Grey Isbister was on his way to class when he saw the tipi being raised.  He decided to stop and lend a hand.

“The girls that began to help the Elder looked as if they were struggling so I decided to help out,” he said.

Walker travels throughout the province giving talks, discussing the history of First Nations people in Saskatchewan.

He said it helps provide a sense of unity among First Nations and non-First Nations students.
