Storage building ablaze in P.A., investigation to follow

Oct 15, 2015 | 6:19 PM

Fire crews were put to work early Thursday evening when a building on 7th St. and 15th Ave. E. went up in flames.

Shortly after 4 p.m., the Prince Albert Fire Department was called to the scene of a storage unit across from Saint John Community School.

According to Fire Chief Jason Everitt, the structure was fully engulfed in flames, with flames coming through the roof upon their arrival.

“This was just a storage building, so we essentially fought the fire from outside,” he explained.

So far, they don’t have answers on the cause but Everitt said they are treating the fire as suspicious, as per investigative procedure.

“The investigation will happen tomorrow, at the earliest, once the building has time to cool down,” said Everitt. “We’ll have an idea on its cause and origin after the investigation.”

The joint investigation will involve both the fire and police departments, according to Everitt.

The Prince Albert Police Service set up barricades directing traffic in the surrounding area.

“We want people just to exercise caution in the area,” said Everitt, who urges drivers to take an alternate route, ensuring they reach final destination safely.

Parkland Ambulance Paramedics also attended the scene. No one was injured.

paNOW will have more on the fire following the investigation.
