Women’s issues to dominate next local forum

Oct 14, 2015 | 11:54 AM

With the federal election right around the corner, Prince Albert residents are getting another chance to hear from local candidates.

The Prince Albert Council of Women is hosting a forum and luncheon this Thursday called “Overcoming women’s barriers to democratic participation.”

Council president Chrissy Halliday said the main focus of the forum will be women’s issues.

She said they’ve asked various women’s groups across Prince Albert to bring forward questions that will be posed to candidates.

“There’s been debates all over the city already to talk about other issues, put on by other organizations, but we felt as the Council of Women and with upcoming Persons Day on Sunday that this would be a good way to talk about Persons Day and also talk about women’s issues as far as the federal election is concerned.”

She said women’s issues, like child care, haven’t been talked about a lot during this election, with the economy dominated most discussions.

“There are things like (child care) that are very important, especially to women in this community,” said Halliday. “We had people asking us all sorts of questions and it was a better idea to bring them to the candidates.”

At this point in time, the NDP’s Lon Borgerson will be attending and Halliday believes Liberal Gordon Kirkby will be present as well.

“I think the biggest importance of women’s issues is women are very concerned with growing families and growing communities. I think this debate is really going to show a lot of community issues, not necessarily just women’s (issues), but they’re going to be put forward from a woman’s perspective,” Halliday said.

Conservative incumbent Randy Hoback has declined to attend, with his campaign manager saying he’ll be busy, “travelling throughout the riding meeting voters.”

The luncheon is $5 to attend, but Halliday said those interested in attending who cannot afford a ticket can call her at 306-961-0213.

Tickets can also be purchased by calling Randi Arnot at 306-953-4777, Pat Leson at 306-764-5051, Rose Rothenburger at 306-961-8410 or by email rose.r@sasktel.net.

The luncheon will be held in the Malhorta Room at the Alfred Jenkins Field House with doors opening at 11 a.m. and lunch to be served at 11:30 a.m.
