Silvertips sink Raiders with second period surge

Oct 12, 2015 | 12:35 AM

The Everett Silvertips broke open a tight scoreless defensive struggle with four goals in the first 8:02 of the second period on their way to a 5-2 win over the visiting Prince Albert Raiders.

Noah Juulsen’s power play point blast started the onslaught just :32 into the middle frame. Saskatoon product Carson Stadnyk followed up on assisting on the Juulson goal by scoring a power play marker of his own with a snap shot into the top corner on Raider rookie goalie Ian Scott moments after the 16 year old made a sensational save on a back door feed. Dawson Leedahl’s deflection just 10 seconds later made it 3-0 Silvertips and Stadnyk finished off a two on one break less than five minutes later closing out a super second period for the Saskatoon skater who had two goals and two assists in the middle frame.

The Silvertips who also held the Raiders to just 7 shots on goal through the first 40 minutes extended the lead to 5-0 on Matt Fonteyne’s power play snipe at 6:21 of the third period.

However the Raiders caught fire in the final frame pouring 20 shots on goal including Matteo Gennaro’s first goal of the season with a toe drag an snap shot past Everett goalie Carter Hart at 11:29 with Simon Stransky solving the Silvertip goalie potting a power play rebound five minutes later. Hart stopped three breakaways and a point blank attempt by Raider captain Tim Vanstone before the Gennaro goal.

Specialty teams were key as Everett went 3-for-6 on the power play while the Raiders ended an 0-for-5 run in the game with Stransky’s power play marker. The goal also ended an 0-for-7 run in the two road games.

Associate coach Dave Manson told the 900 CKBI post game show audience the team’s play has been spotty in both games of this six game road swing. Manson said the team played better in the third period when the players relaxed and didn’t worry about making mistakes. However he was critical of the types of penalties taken against a Silvertips team with a strong power play. Manson he did have priase for the fourth line and young defensemen who saw more ice time in the third period with the game out of reach.

The third period recovery resulted in the Raiders outshooting the Silvertips 27-25. The loss drops Prince Albert’s record to 4-2-0-1.

The Raiders resume the road trip Tuesday night in Portland.  Game time is 8pm Saskatchewan time with 900 CKBI coverage beginning at 7:40.
