Weekend hockey wrap-up featuring Icehawks, Bears and Mintos

The Prince Albert Icehawks were shutout Sunday in a 3-0 loss to the Regina Capitals.

After winning their first two games on the road to start the year, the Icehawks have now dropped both of their home games to have an even 2-2 record. The Icehawks lost their home opener Wednesday 4-2 to the Tri-Town Thunder.

On Sunday, the Capitals outshot the Icehawks 52-20 in the victory as Icehawks goaltender Tyler Gordon did his best with 49 saves. Eric Duran, Tristen Keshane and Morgan Gallais scored for the Capitals.

Bears sweep away Prairie Fire

The Prince Albert A&W Bears picked up a pair of wins on the road in a two-game set against the Melville Prairie Fire this weekend. The Bears beat the Prairie Fire 4-3 on Sunday, after a 5-2 win on Saturday.

Story Navrot, Kaytlyn Chickowski, Abby Soyko and Brooklyn Hopkins scored for the Bears in the win.

Bears goaltender Ryan Fontaine picked up her first win on Sunday.

Brooklyn Hopkins had a goal and an assist to lead the Bears in Saturday’s game. Brooke Hobson, Story Navrot, Jadyn Kushniruk and Abby Soyko also scored for the Bears.

Shayla Youngman made 18 saves for her second victory for the Bears.

The Bears now sit with a 3-1 record to start the year.

Mintos split in Southern Saskatchwan trip

The Prince Albert Mintos four-game win streak to start the season ended abruptly Sunday. The Mintos were blown out 7-0 against the Moose Jaw Generals on the road.

Mintos rookie goaltender Jake Davidson stayed in for the game, making 29 saves on 36 shots.

The Mintos wanted to rest veteran goalie Derrick Hucul after he made 44 saves in the 3-2 win over the Regina Pat Canadians Saturday in Regina.

Mintos defenceman Layne Matechuk scored his first Midget AAA career goal with 28 seconds left in the game to give the Mintos the 3-2 win. Dylan McCabe and Braden Isbister also scored for the Mintos in the victory.

 

Midget AA Raiders face tough time on the road

The Prince Albert Midget AA Raiders began their 2015-2016 season with a loss against the North Battleford Barons.

The Barons lead the game 3-0 by the end of the first period. The Raiders fought to a 3-3 tie at the end of the second.

Second period goals came from Matthew Kutnikoff, Kyle Schneider and Ty Mcbeth.

The Barons managed to secure two goals to the Raiders’ one, winning the game 5-4.

Sunday Oct. 11 saw the Raiders play the Unity Lazers.

Once again the Raiders finished the first period behind by three.

Goals from Jakob Tournier and Matthew Flodell  in the second, and another from Schneider in the third brought the Raiders from the brink, but it wasn’t enough.

The Lazers finished the game 6-3.

The Raiders travel to Saskatoon on Wed, Oct. 14 to take on the Icehawks.
