Survey interested in trauma survivors from Prince Albert

Oct 11, 2015 | 4:05 PM

Surviving and moving past trauma can be incredibly difficult, and now Prince Albert residents who have survived some sort of intense struggle can use their experience to help.

Seint Kokokyi, a graduate student at the University of Regina, is looking for trauma survivors to help with a study of experiences with doctors and the healthcare system.

The study includes an online screening survey, which takes approximately 10-15 minutes.

Based on survey results individuals will be invited to participate in a telephone interview to share their experiences.

The telephone interview will last 60-90 minutes and include several open-ended questions about the participant’s health care experiences.

Often those who have undergone trauma suffer many psychological changes that can leave them labelled as difficult patients.

“With trauma individuals are often at risk for multiple medical as well as psychological ailments,” Kokokyi said.

These psychological ailments most often manifest as depression, but can include mood swings and personality disorders.

This study hopes to help medical professionals “understand what appropriate care is (for these patients) and what is comfortable for them.”

Anyone looking for more information on the student can reach Kokokyi at 306-585-4300 or schtlab@uregina.ca

Participants of the telephone interview will receive $40 in appreciation for their time.

The survey is only open for those 18 years or older.
