Raiders fall 3-2 in a shootout to Seattle

For the first time this year, the Prince Albert Raiders couldn’t pick up a win after regulation.

The Raiders lost 3-2 in a shootout to the Seattle Thunderbirds Saturday, in the Raiders’ first game of their American road trip.

The loss snaps the Raiders’ four game winning streak and brings their record to a 4-1-0-1. In the six games the Raiders have played this year, two have gone to overtime and two have gone to the shootout.

Goaltender Rylan Parenteau was the main reason the Raiders were able to survive until the shootout as he made 37 saves in the game. He was especially sharp in the overtime frame, diving across his crease to make a highlight reel save on Keegan Kolesar, then flashed the leather on Ryan Gropp with the glove hand midway through the extra period.

Parenteau ran out of steam by shootout time as Mathew Barzal, Jamal Watson and Keegan Kolesar all scored to give the T-Birds the shootout victory. Simon Stransky was the only Raiders scorer in the shootout.

The Raiders dominated the first 15 minutes of the game and were rewarded with a 2-0 lead. Austin Glover cleaned up a rebound to put the Raiders ahead 1-0 five minutes into the first, assisted by his linemates Reid Gardiner and Simon Stransky. Three and a half minutes later, Reid Gardiner scored his sixth goal after Glover won a battle in the corner.

The top line of the Raiders are off to a smoking hot start, as they have now combined for 31 points between them through six games.

But just about the rest of the game was played in the Raiders’ zone. In the final 45 minutes, the Thunderbirds outshot the Raiders 31-10 including a 12-3 discrepancy in the third period.

Mathew Barzal scored on the power play for the Thunderbirds late in the first as the home team gained some momentum heading into the second. It was Barzal’s first game of the season after spending the start of the year with the New York Islanders, who drafted him in the first round of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft.

Keegan Kolesar tied the game in the third period, the second Thunderbirds goal with the man-advantage.

The Raiders will be in Everett to face the Silvertips on Sunday for their second game of their American road trip.
