Laughs and lobsters at 2nd Annual Lobsterfest

Sep 20, 2015 | 8:38 AM

Laughs were had and lobsters were boiled at the 2nd Annual Lobsterfest Saturday at the Art Hauser Centre.

Proceeds from the event went to the Lakeland Early Learning Cooperative in Christopher Lake.

The goal of the night was to raise enough funds to ensure that “all the programming is fully realized at the center,” said organizer Robyn Hufnagel.  “We want to make sure every day is a safe and happy learning day for the children.”

After a very successful first year, raising over $14,000, the fundraiser doubled down on the prizes.

There was a silent auction and a 50/50 draw, but the main attraction was a signed Wayne Gretzky jersey from his time with the Edmonton Oilers.

A stay at Elk Ridge Lodge was also up for auction, as well as head table service that saw the winners receive red seal chef service at their table.

The most enticing prize was the chance to eat a five pound lobster.

“We’ve flown the lobsters in from Prince Edward Island,” explained Hufnagel. “We picked them up from Air Canada just this morning. And then we purchased large turkey deep fryers just for them.”

Organizing any large dinner is a challenge, but especially so with notoriously difficult lobster meat which has to be cooked just right.

The cooking area before the event was quite hectic, with only eight boilers for several hundred lobsters.

“Everyone wants the perfectly cooked lobster and steak,” Hufnagel said. “It’s all about making sure there’s not too many cooks in the kitchen but there’s enough volunteers to make it a successful dinner.”

Several volunteers arrived at 1 p.m., and it was expected that most would stay until after midnight.

Hufnagel made it a special point to thank all of their volunteers during the night, and also their sponsor PR Septic Services.

All of the hard work paid off though. Guests laughed and cheered as they dined, and the auction was a great success.

The Wayne Gretzky jersey sold for $1,000 to Kevin Hoodle.

Jodie Harkness won the stay at Elk Ridge for $550.

Head table service went to Christoph Meier to the tune of $1,050.

The five pound lobster was awarded to Tania Sprigs for $500.

The night ended with a rousing performance by regional band Heidi Munro and Misdeal.
