Raider rookies rally against Hitmen

Sep 5, 2015 | 11:00 PM

Raider rookies stepped up in a much better collective effort on Saturday, compared to Friday’s preseason opening 7-4 loss to Regina, but the end result was the same.

Jordy Stallard scored on a scramble in front of the Raider net early in the third period as the Hitmen got the bounce they needed to post a 4-3 win, their third straight victory of the Regina tournament by identical scores.

The game was scoreless until 13:53 of the first period when Terrell Draude jammed in a rebound for the only goal of the opening frame.

The Raiders battled back from deficits of 2-0 and 3-1 in the second period as the Prince Albert rookies went to work. Luke Coleman took advantage of a Jake Bean turnover at the Raider blue line to race the length of the ice and slide a sharp angle shot under Calgary goalie Lasse Pedersen less than a minute into the middle frame. Speedy second round draft choice Spencer Moe was in on the next two Prince Albert goals. His shot set up Parker Kelly’s marker at 13:22 and Moe converted first round pick Cole Fonstad’s original shot just over two minutes later to send the teams into the dressing rooms tied after 40 minutes.

A lack of puck luck plagued the Raiders as Josh Maser rung a high shot off the post in the opening minutes and Coleman clipped the cross bar late in the second period.

A slightly more experienced Raider squad than Friday night against Regina had seven veterans in the lineup against Calgary who dressed 13 returnees.

Raider goalies Ian Scott and Curtis Meger split duties for the second straight game. Scott stopped 13-of-16 shots, while Meger who looked much more confident than in Friday’s game against the Pats allowed just one goal on 15 shots, the wonky winner credited to Stollard.

The Raiders were 1-8 on the power play and killed off both Hotmen advantages.

The four 15-year-olds who played for Prince Albert over the weekend are now returning home for their post preseason assignments. Fonstad, Moe, Carson Miller and Lane Kirk played in both Regina tournament games. Kirk, the fifth round pick selected 97th overall last May played a strong game in all situations against the more experienced Calgary crew.

Injured veterans Jesse Lees and Tim Vanstone sat out both games but say their recoveries are progressing well.

The Raiders return to practice Monday to get ready for Friday’s 7pm preseason home opener against the Blades. Admission is free for the Saskatoon game which is the first of a home and home series. Both games can also be heard on 900 CKBI.
