Stabbing suspect allegedly injured by RCMP, investigation pending

An incident is being investigated after a stabbing suspect was injured while running from RCMP.

Blaine Lake RCMP responded to an apparent stabbing on the Mistawasis First Nation on Saturday, August 29 around 11:30 p.m.

RCMP identified and located the lead suspect. The man was walking on a back road on Mistawasis First Nation and was in possession of cocaine and cash as RCMP searched him.

After the search, the suspect ran from police, into a nearby field, but was eventually detained.

The suspect sustained a non-life threatening injury after being pursued by police.

The 20-year-old man from Saskatoon was examined by EMS and transported to Shellbrook Hospital. The suspect was released from police custody and RCMP do not have any further health updates on him.

The two men who were victims of the stabbing were treated for their injuries. Both were released at the scene by EMS.

Investigation into the stabbing is ongoing and charges are pending against the suspect.

A senior member with the RCMP senior management division has been assigned to conduct an investigation into the injury the suspect had sustained during detainment.

The findings of the investigation will be reported to the province to ensure transparency.

The RCMP has also requested the Ministry of Justice appoint an independent observer in addition to the independent internal investigation.
