Ty Campbell wins Jr. Lobstick in his last year; tough luck for Hurd in 1st Flight

Saskatoon’s Ty Campbell has been playing in the Pepsi Junior Lobstick Tournaments in Waskesiu since he was 12 years old. This tournament was his last chance to win the Junior title as he’s 18.

He did just that as Ty beat Andrew Campbell after the 14th hole on Friday to win the Championship Flight of the tournament.

“The closest I’ve been is Championship Flight Consolation runner-up, so this is by far my best year and this is my last year,” said Ty. “To end on a win, that’s good.”

Ty brought his ‘A game’ to the tournament and showed his dominance early on. He was the only golfer to shoot under par during Monday’s qualifying round with his -1, 69. Ty then won all four of his matches, defeating Cole Obrigewitsch, Brock Ochitwa and Payton Ochitwa before beating Andrew Campbell in the finals.

“I played well,” said Ty. “Coming into it, I wasn’t too sure but I got here and played good in the practice round and then played well the whole week. It felt pretty good.”

Prince Albert’s Zach Hurd fell into some tough luck with his First Flight finals loss—after the second playoff hole— to Humboldt’s Tayden Wallin.

After Wallin made a par on the second playoff hole, Hurd needed to sink a 10-foot putt to save par and extend the match.

But just as Hurd was about to make contact with the ball, a loud banging noise came from around the first tee block. Hurd missed his putt, looked back at the source of the noise, then shook his head as he went to pick up his ball.

“It was kind of tough because it was as I was stroking the putt, but I should be better than that—I should block that out,” said Hurd. “It’s frustrating when you’re in the heat of the moment and you’ve been working all day to get to that point.

“It’s kinda tough to see that in your backswing, but you have to be better than that.”

P.A’s Kyle Schneider won the First Round Flight Consolation over Saskatoon’s Michael Spafford.
