Weekend concert featuring multi-million dollar instrument

Aug 6, 2015 | 5:35 PM

A special concert on Sunday will bring two amazing musicians and a very special instrument to Prince Albert.

At 3 p.m. pianist Samuel Deason and the great Canadian cellist Arnold Choi will be hosting a concert at Wesley United Church.

“There’s a ton of wonderful music on the concert program but of particular interest will undoubtedly be the instrument that Arnold is performing on,” Deason said.

Choi performs on a 1692 Bonjour Stradivarius cello, which was recently appraised at over $11 million.

“It’s probably one of the nicest instruments in the world,” Deason said.

In terms of sound, Deason says the 1692 instrument is a “luxury car” compared to more modern cellos.

“You actually need a very skilled driver to drive those cars as you also need a skilled musician to make this cello truly sound its best. I think there’s no better match than Arnold, he is a very deserving musician to play this.”

Choi was awarded the use of the cello for the next three years after winning a national competition in Canada.

“Somebody donated the instrument [anonymously] to the Canada Council of the Arts. I don’t even think Arnold knows who really owns the instrument,” Deason said.

In order for Choi to travel with the cello he has to purchase an extra seat when he’s travelling by plane.

“[He has to] make special preparations with the airline company to have special straps to tie it down into the seat. It’s really annoying and complicated, but better that than checking it,” Deason explained.

The first half of the concert will feature Choi playing solo on the cello so the audience has a chance to here the instrument in its purest form.

Deason will also perform solo.

The second half will feature the two playing together.

Deason said the audience will get to hear the cello in every kind of range.
