Astros/Selects postponed to Friday due to weather

Aug 6, 2015 | 1:45 PM

The Prince Albert Astros will have to wait until Friday to try and get their third win at the 2015 U16 Boy’s Canadian Fast Pitch Championships.

The Astros game against the Saskatoon Selects Thursday evening has been postponed, as have the rest of Thursday’s games in the tournament due to weather.

That means the Astros will be slated to play three games on Friday. They’ll take on the Selects at noon, then play back-to-back games against the Newfoundland Eastbound at 4 p.m. and the Ontario Glencoe club at 5:30 p.m.

Astros 10 Warman 4

The Prince Albert Astros won their second straight game of the tournament Thursday morning. They defeated the Warman Poly Plus Pride 10-4 at Prime Minister’s Park to improve their record to 2-1– good for a tie for second place in the tournament.

The Astros gave themselves an early cushion by scoring four runs in the top of the first inning. That cushion had almost disappeared as the Pride fought back and cut the Astros’ lead to 5-4 after the third inning.

But the Pride didn’t score a run once Astros pitcher Cameron LeBlanc took the mound late in the third inning. LeBlanc only surrendered one hit and struck out five in the 4.1 innings he pitched.

Talon Thomas, who started the game on the mound for the Astros, gave up four earned runs in 2.2 innings. He made up for it by hitting a two-run home run in the fifth inning to give the Astros a 7-4 lead. Thomas was the most productive Astros hitter, getting two hits, batting in three runs and scoring twice.

Centre fielder Calvin Napope went 3-3 from the plate and scored three runs and batting one run in.

After dropping their opener 10-0 to Chepstow Lang Farms from Ontario on Wednesday, they have now won two in a row. The mini win streak started Wednesday evening when the Astros beat the Pimicikamak Thunder from Manitoba 5-2.
