Guhle signs with Sabres “earlier” than expected

Exactly a month after getting selected in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, Brendan Guhle already has his first NHL contract.

Late Monday evening, Guhle signed a three-year entry level contract with the Buffalo Sabres, who picked him 51 overall in the second round back on June 27.

“It’s a pretty cool feeling, it happened a little earlier than I anticipated but I think it’s a good sign for me,” said Guhle. “I’m excited for the season, I think it will be a good year of development for me.

“They just kind of sent me a proposal and negotiated it a little bit. We just worked something out yesterday (late Monday) and we’re both happy with it, so it’s done.”

Guhle played the full 72-game schedule with the Raiders last year and scored 32 points with the team.

He’s played with a number of players that have signed NHL contracts like Josh Morrissey (Winnipeg), Leon Draisaitl (Edmonton) and most recently Mackenze Stewart (Vancouver) and Hunter Warner (Minnesota).  When asked what he learned from playing with guys with NHL contracts in their pockets, Guhle said he’s going to continue to be himself.

“I’m just going to keep being who I am. I know that signing a contract doesn’t change who I am so I’m just going to continue being a good teammate and a good leader,” said Guhle. “Hopefully we can put together a good team here this year.”

Raiders training camp starts on Aug. 27.
