Can the first-year Whiskey Jacks win three in a row?

Jul 21, 2015 | 8:27 AM

The Prince Albert Whiskey Jacks may be in their first year in the North Sask Rugby Union and half their team may not have any prior experience.

None of that really matters anymore. The Whiskey Jacks have an opportunity to win three matches in a row on Thursday.

They’ll take on the Krems after winning both of their matches last week, 28-26 over the Gophers July 18, and 25-22 over the Badgers July 15—the Whiskey Jacks’ first ever victory

Whiskey Jacks forward Graham Pedersen, who’s from Prince Albert and Saskatchewan River Dragons alumnus, said that accomplishing a trifecta of wins would be an excellent accomplishment in the team’s inaugural season.

“To go on a three-game winning streak would mean quite a bit,” said Pedersen. “To all the guys here, they’re working extremely hard and they all want that win, too.

“It’s a good atmosphere here, we’re excited.”

The Whiskey Jacks won both of their games last week, Wednesday against the Badgers and Saturday against the Gophers.

Although about half of the team had no experience in the sport heading into the season, they’ve made up for it in other ways.

“I think it’s just through hard work and grit,” said Pedersen. “A lot of the guys here haven’t played before they seem to like to hit and tackle. It’s just been hard work and making tackles.

“A lot of them have played other sports, they’ve just never played rugby. They can relate to some of those other sports like good position—a lot of them played football so they know how to tackle, too.

Pedersen, though, is not one of those numbers. He’s one of six Whiskey Jacks that are on provincial teams, him being on the Team Sask Under-23 squad. Whiskey Jacks head coach Dominic Elsbury said that Pedersen has been one of the team’s better players in their forward pack throughout the season, a compliment that carries a lot of weight.

“That coming from him, that means a lot to me,” said Pedersen. “Dom knows so much about the game. He used to play in England and he’s played pretty much since he could walk,

Thursday’s game starts at 8 p.m. at Prime Minister’s Park, the last home game of the year.
