More rain on the way for La Ronge

Jul 17, 2015 | 12:07 PM

Some areas of northern Saskatchewan had some much needed rain.

According to Terri Lang, a meteorologist with Environment Canada, La Ronge received 22 millimetres, or almost an inch, of rain overnight and could see another 30 millimetres in the next 24 hours.

Lang said a low pressure system is moving its way into west central Saskatchewan and that’s what will be bringing the rain.

“We’ll probably see some more showers or thundershower activity throughout the day in La Ronge today. That will slowly pull off it looks like overnight. Saturday looks like a relatively dry day, probably on the cool side in behind the supper low,” said Lang.

For Sunday, Lang said it looks like a cold front will be moving in and travelling down from the north and could bring with it another chance of showers or thundershowers.

“I think any rain is welcome because there’s such a moisture deficit all across the entire province,” said Lang. “We’re down so much moisture coming all the way from spring through the summer so far so I think any amount of moisture is helpful.”

The low pressure system moving into the province is one that could bring funnel clouds with it.

Lang said forecasters will look at the conditions and if they think it’s warranted they will put out an advisory about potential funnel clouds.

“I think it’s sort of a good proactive thing because sometimes when people see funnel clouds they get scared, and rightfully so. But there are certain conditions that form, like those little funnel clouds that we see out of the clouds, and then there are those ones that form tornadic clouds that can last a long time, and today is certainly the day where we’d see tiny funnel clouds.”

Last night also brought storms to the Prince Albert area.

Christopher Lake was slammed by a storm that brought golf ball sized hail and 55 millimeters of rain, or just over two inches.

Lang said Prince Albert and area has actually been getting a decent amount of rain this year even though it may not feel like it.

Prince Albert saw 27 millimetres of rain, or just over an inch, last night.

The average rainfall for Prince Albert in July is 76.6 millimetres and so far this month we’ve seen 24.4 millimetres.

“You’re halfway through the month so compared to other places Prince Albert is doing pretty well. I think that’s a happy thing … given how dry it is for the farmers and firefighters I think rain kind of puts a smile on your face these days,” said Lang.
