SK Government Fire Update – July 13

Jul 13, 2015 | 1:10 PM

125 active wildfires with nearly 1500 personnel fighting fires across the province today. Training begins today for 90 more individuals that volunteered to become Type 3 firefighters with more sessions to come. The Prince Albert Grand Council is also holding training sessions.

No significant changes to fire threats to communities but dry hot conditions in the last 24 hours have kept crews busy and today will be another important day for fire suppression efforts.

We’re hoping for rain. Today looks dry in most northern areas but some precipitation is expected tomorrow and throughout the week, especially for the west side of the province.

We understand many evacuees are anxious to go home. It is our priority to reduce threats to ensure people can come home.

However, in order to lift an evacuation order, a number of criteria must be met.

– Wildfire Status: The wildfire doesn’t pose a direct threat to the community.
– Health Assessment: Smoke does not pose a risk to those with high-priority health issues, to all community members and there are adequate medical supplies and staff in the community to provide medical services.
– Essential Services: Safe water to drink, power, telephone, sewer, gas, and 911 service is available.
– Community Services: Local authority and leadership is present.

The government works with local officials and provincial agencies to assess this criteria to ensure it’s safe for people to return.

IMPORTANT: We’ve had reports of individuals trying to return to their cabins in areas that are under mandatory evacuations, specifically the Weyakwin area. This can significantly impede fire suppression operations. Officials and emergency responders have to shift their attention to your safety rather than their missions causing unnecessary risk and delays.

We appreciate your patience and will work hard to get people back in their homes as soon as possible.
