Waskesiu to host inaugural Lakeside Festival

Jun 15, 2015 | 6:52 AM

Parks Canada is hosting an inaugural festival that highlights one of Prince Albert National Park’s biggest draws – its natural beauty.

Along with Parks Canada, a number of dedicated volunteers and business operators from Waskesiu are helping in getting the Waskesiu Lakeside Festival up and running.

Robyn Hufnagel, promotions officer with the Prince Albert National Park, said the festival, to be held Aug 21 to 23, is a three-day, family-friendly event aimed at engaging youth and families through music and nature.

“It’s an outdoor music concert but also performing artists throughout the town site of Waskesiu, conservation speakers, children’s programs, aquatic activities like canoes, kayaks and paddleboard races, all set in the most stunning place in Saskatchewan, the Prince Albert National Park.”

All activities over the weekend will be free and Hufnagel said the only thing people need to pay for is entry into the national park.

“Once you’re in the town site of Waskesiu and at the festival grounds the music, the programs, the speaking engagements, the paddle boarding, we have all of those boats to try out for free for all of our visitors.”

As programs and activities are confirmed they will be posted to the Waskesiu Chamber of Commerce website, on the festival’s Facebook page or by following them on Twitter @lakesidefest

“There’s lots of places to find information. We’re using social media to keep everyone current as things evolve and we get more activities planned and programs.”

Hufnagel said they are also looking for volunteers and if anyone would like to help they can contact the festival through their social media accounts.

She says the festival and events are part of the national park experience and are also a way “foster community pride and teach people new things and strengthen relationships.”

Numerous organizations such as Parks Canada, the Waskesiu Foundation, Waskesiu Chamber of Commerce, the Community Council in Waskesiu, all came together to develop and implement part of a strategic plan, the Waskesiu 20/20 visioning plan, which includes creating the Lakeside Festival.

“A part of that is to increase visitation in the latter part of the summer when we start to see people getting ready to go back to school. So it’s just another opportunity for another summer fun thing to do for families.”

The planning for the festival began last year.
