Drunk driving bill’s progress grinds to a halt

Jun 9, 2015 | 7:02 AM

A private member’s bill that would raise the punishments for people caught drinking and driving, is for all intents and purposes dead.

The bill, drafted by Prince Albert MP Randy Hoback, came up for third reading on Friday. It was expected that the bill would pass, but instead the NDP ran the clock, as he described it, and prevented the final vote from happening.

“The only speculation that I can think of is it’s revenge for the fact that I was the one who wrote the letter to the board of internal economy, asking them to investigate the illegal offices that they (NDP) were setting up around the country,” said Hoback.

As a result of that investigation, the NDP was ordered to pay back $2.7 million, according to the MP.

Hoback said it’s very frustrating because he had unanimous consent coming out of committee. Both the Liberals and the NDP had also told him that the bill would go through without a problem.

“And then the house leader (Peter Julian) decided to take on his own tangent, now whether he had direction from the leader (Thomas Mulcair) directly or not I am suspicious of that. Regardless, the fact is that we’re going to have more drunk drivers on the road,” said Hoback.

Hoback said after the session, the NDP house leader would not even look in his direction.

“I always give them (opposition) the benefit of the doubt, that if you work with them and treat them fair, that they’ll do what this Parliament is supposed to do and that’s take good legislation and pass it through. They (NDP) showed us that you just can’t trust them and that they do what they want to do based on a whim,” said Hoback.

He said there may be another opportunity for a vote this month on June 17, but it’s unlikely.

“We could have had our roads safer this summer if this would have passed, no question in my mind that them playing partisan politics will lead to peoples’ deaths,” said Hoback.

paNOW attempted to contact the NDP for comment on Monday, but our calls were not returned.
