Prince Albert rising up against domestic violence

May 19, 2015 | 1:03 PM

Prince Albert residents are being asked to ‘rise up’ for the next two weeks and speak out against violence and abuse against women.

The official kick off to the ‘Rise Up’ event started on Tuesday at City Hall in Prince Albert.

Speakers like Prince Albert Police Chief Troy Cooper, YWCA CEO Donna Brooks and others spoke about their own experiences with domestic and sexual violence.

Along with these speakers, event planners Conrad Burns and Patricia Crowe kicked off the Rise Up social media campaign.

The viral campaign involves writing the words “Rise Up” on your hand and then saying in front of the camera “I (your name) rise up against violence and abuse against women,” and then challenging another friend to take the pledge and record themselves challenging someone else.

Looking ahead at the events, the short work week is jammed with events in Prince Albert that aim to drop some appalling statistics on violence.

Tuesday is the first public event hosted by Rise Up Prince Albert – a group created to help people end violence and abuse while healing as a community. In Canada, one in four women are abused and 91 per cent of victims are aboriginal.

According to Danny Mirasty, the idea of hosting a concert while getting “information out there to people who need it” inspired the formation of the Rise Up group.
