Standing Up for Women in Crisis

May 15, 2015 | 10:56 AM

Rise Up Prince Albert, an upcoming event organized to fight back against the abuse of women, was inspired by one man who wanted to stand up for what is right.

“One day I saw an article saying that men need to step up (against the abuse and murder of women and children) and I got the idea to do this – to have an event that would get information out there to people who need it and to have a concert raising awareness about this issue,”  recalls Danny Mirasty. “You know, I have friends who are missing and have been missing for many years. I grew up with abuse amongst a lot of people on my reserve; I have a cousin and a niece that both died as a result of domestic violence. I just thought, this is my time to stand up.”

Mirasty, a drummer with the band, The Black Eyed Creez and a respected musician/promoter in the area, took the idea and contacted Conrad Burns who is well known in the Prince Albert area for his work promoting this issue of stopping the violence against women.

Since then a committee has been formed and a variety of events are being planned for the last days of May.

Mirasty is putting together a day long concert that will be at Kinsmen Park May 30 starting with speeches and then a long list of provincial and local entertainers of all genres.

“We really want a good mix. We have some great musicians volunteering their time and their travel already and are looking for some experienced local musicians to participate as well. We are looking for musicians of all genres and all ages.”

Musicians can expect sets anywhere from 15 minutes to half an hour.

Anyone who would like to volunteer or participate in the event can call Mirasty at 1.306.420.9210 or email at danmirasty@hotmail.com.
