Quad sparks weekend grass fire by Albertville

May 11, 2015 | 7:00 AM

A grass and brush fire just outside Albertville an Saturday started with a spark off a quad and spread five hectares before it was contained, according to Buckland Fire and Rescue’s chief.

“Just a bit of the sparkage coming from the muffler or exhaust” off a local man’s quad turned into something much larger, said Chief Jim Miller.

The man was “moving around the land with his quad and he looked back and it was on fire,” Miller described.

That man called for help and sprang into action.

“In the meantime for us to travel the distance he had a little tractor-type loader, rototiller, that was trying to make guards for it. So he had done quite a bit before we got there,” Miller said.

Conditions weren’t as dry as in recent weeks, with humidity at 32 per cent.

Miller used that as a reminder that people “always have to be careful.”

He did say some wind gusts helped the fire spread and long grass growth meant there was “a lot of fuel there when it starts to burn.” Luckily, there was standing water in the area keeping the fire from heading in certain directions.

However, the fire had managed to get up to five hectares in size in the two hours that 17 members of Buckland Fire and Rescue were out there.

In relative terms, that’s a bit smaller in size than the University of Saskatchewan campus.

Later on Saturday, Buckland Fire was called out to a tree fire that started from arcing with the power line.
