Burns family copes with accused’s not guilty plea

After months of delays in court, the family of a murder victim is struggling with a not guilty plea entered in Prince Albert Provincial Court.

The body of Monica Burns, 28, was found on Jan. 17 on a snowmobile trail outside the city.

Todd Daniel McKeaveney, 38, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder a week and a half later.

On Thursday, he appeared by video link from the Regina Correctional Centre in court.

There was no mincing of words as his case moved forward on a number of fronts.

McKeaveney elected to be tried by judge and jury, entered a not guilty plea, set a preliminary hearing for Sept. 28, and consented to his remand for the time being.

During this, Monica Burns’ twin sister Michelle cried. She sat next to family members Pernell and Candace Ballantyne.

McKeaveney’s defence counsel, legal aid lawyer Rosanne Newman, noted they haven’t filed a bail application. However, that could change.

Burns’ family has been present at all court dates, including a scheduled bail hearing that didn’t go ahead. McKeaveney was present at that date, but has appeared by video for most other appearances.

Burns’ family was too emotional to speak to media when leaving court.

They were accompanied by a member of victim services.

If McKeaveney seeks bail, the hearing will take place at Prince Albert’s Court of Queen’s Bench. That’s the same court where a trial will take place.
