Apartment fire considered ‘suspicious’

Apr 29, 2015 | 10:24 PM

There were no injuries reported after a fire at the Carlton Park apartments on Wednesday night.

Residents of the apartment building were quickly evacuated following what sounded like an explosion.

“When I was in my room I heard a loud boom that sounded like a gunshot and then I went outside to check what it was and I saw this fire,” said Cyandra Laban.

The police and fire department arrived a short time later.

A police officer at the scene told paNOW that they were not sure if the fire ignited from within the suite or if someone had thrown something through the window.

“My sister came and told me there was a fire, I didn’t believe her because there are always kids pulling the fire alarm,” said Kyle Laban.

Kyle quickly rushed to check on his neighbour across the hall.

“The lady across from me didn’t think it was a fire, and she was sleeping. I had to help her get all her kids out, she had six kids by herself,” he said. “I came into her house, she allowed me in and told me to come grab her little baby so I grabbed her.”

The Prince Albert Fire Department confirmed on Thursday morning that they were treating the fire as suspicious.  The exact cause is not known.

There was considerable damage to the suite.
