Students to pitch in to clean up their community

For a fifth year in a row, the City of Prince Albert is asking residents to pitch in and help clean up the community.

The annual Pitch in Week campaign will begin on May 4 and will run until May 9. Coun. Charlene Miller has been organizing cleanup efforts in her ward each year, and her husband, David, has a crew that helps take larger items to the landfill.

Grades 4 to 6 students from Queen Mary Community School will participate in the cleanup during the week. Miller will be providing lunch for the students. They will be cleaning up the area between Ninth Avenue to 20th Avenue West, from River Street to 18th Street West.

Queen Mary principal Mark Hastings said it’s important for the students to realize they need to help keep the community clean.

“It’s also good to have the community see that our kids are good kids and they’re out in the community helping to do some pitch-in and cleaning up the side streets and also the school grounds,” Hastings said.

Hastings said the students would also learn about citizenship.

“Plus, the citizenship piece it helps our school on is that the neighbourhood families and folks get to see our kids picking things up and it’s a good thing for our school.”

The school has also held a spring cleanup on the grounds after the snow melt.

The state of litter in the city this year is the same as in other years, Miller said.

“As the snow melts, everything comes out, so everybody should participate in cleaning up their front area and their back alleys,” she said.

Miller is inviting other residents to help with the Pitch in Week cleanup and volunteer in the mornings, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
