Canadian Diabetes Association calling for local volunteers

Apr 28, 2015 | 12:26 PM

The Canadian Diabetes Association is looking for more volunteers in Prince Albert.

Janice Daniels, a community engagement co-ordinator, said the city is down about 100 volunteers. “Any volunteers that are able to help us is a welcome asset.”

She said all volunteers need to do is donate their time and pick a route to canvas.

Volunteers who canvas go door to door to about 20-25 houses and ask homeowners if they would be willing to donate anything to the association.

“We’re a little lower than in previous years for volunteers for Prince Albert and it’s that way across the province, so it’s not just P.A. that we’re having difficulties with volunteers,” Daniels said.

She said they have various opportunities for volunteers to help out with be it canvassing or becoming a zone captain who helps those who are canvassing.

In Saskatchewan alone, 93,000 people have been diagnosed with diabetes and more than 175,000 are pre-diabetic.

Daniels said that means one in four people in the province are affected by diabetes in some way.

Any of the donations that come into the association go to a multitude of things including education, awareness, support and research.

“We’ll come out and try to give as much education as we have for the people in need of it. We’re trying to help people live better lives with maintaining their diabetes,” Daniels said.

She said they have a travelling diabetes resource program they try to bring to the northern regions of the province. They will also go to places that aren’t able to access the diabetes programs that would be more readily available to larger communities.

For anyone looking to volunteer or donate, call Daniels at 306-933-1238 ext. 223 or send an email to janice.daniels@diabetes.ca.
