Authors promote literacy to P.A. students and adults

Some special guests were at Arthur Pechey Public School in Prince Albert on Thursday.

To help promote enthusiasm and excitement for reading, vice-principal Dejan Letkeman said they invited Carey Rigby-Wilcox, a literacy advocate and author of “My Dad Couldn’t Read” and “My Mummy Couldn’t Read,” and Mary Bishop, author of the Moose Jaw “Tunnels” series, to speak to the students.

This falls in line with the school’s goal this year to have 100 per cent of their students reach proficiency or mastery in reading comprehension or reach their individual benchmark goals.

“And what better way of doing that than bringing in the architects and the authors of the books that we love to read so much,” Letkeman said.

The authors presented their work to the kindergarten to Grade 8 students.

“She (Rigby-Wilcox), herself, had actually finished high school with a low level of literacy and when she was expecting she decided that she wanted to be a reader for her children and so she threw herself into becoming a reader, and then I guess eventually, a writer,” he explained.

Rigby-Wilcox explained because of her hardships that she overcame, she wants the children in the school to help spread her message to adult learners at home.

“There’s GED classrooms or there’s someone to help them like a tutor to help them learn more literacy skills, so that is what my mission in life is,” Rigby-Wilcox said.

In addition, she wants the students to know that reading can be fun.  A book can be read many different ways, making it fun every way you read it, she added.

“You don’t have to make it boring.  You can sing it, you can act it out, but try to show the importance of literacy and reading at a very young age to promote it for success in the future,” Rigby-Wilcox said.

The school has almost reached its goal, Letkeman said.

Every year, Arthur Pechey sets a new goal for students on various topics.
