McFee ‘wild card candidate’ to be next Toronto police chief: report

Apr 16, 2015 | 12:40 PM

Former Prince Albert Police Service chief Dale McFee is a “wild card candidate” to become the next chief of the Toronto Police Service.

The Globe and Mail is reporting that a source “with knowledge of the process” told them McFee is considered to be a “viable” outside alternative to Toronto Police Service Deputy Chiefs Peter Sloly and Mark Saunders.

Current Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair’s contract expires later this month, ending his 10-year tenure. In July 2014, the Toronto Police Services Board announced they would not renew Blair’s contract, which ends on April 25.

The board is now looking to name a replacement. Calls made to the Toronto Police Services Board have not been returned.

McFee is currently the deputy minister of corrections, public safety and policing and president of the Prince Albert Raiders. He left his post as the chief of the Prince Albert Police Service in 2012.

The former chief helped to establish the HUB and the COR (Centre of Responsibility) – basing the community policing model he brought to Prince Albert from one developed in Scotland.

McFee and his office declined to issue a comment about the Globe and Mail story at this time.

“Saskatchewan is leading the country in terms of community safety with the HUB and COR models of course being pioneered out of Prince Albert,” said ministry of corrections, public safety and policing spokesperson Drew Wilby on Thursday morning.

“They’re being recognized as leading-edge models that are now being replicated across the country and other countries around the world.”
