The Saskatchewan Government has committed a significant amount of funding to services that help to keep northern families together.

On Wednesday, Prince Albert Northcote MLA Victoria Jurgens re-iterated that the government has committed $5.8 million to the Native Co-ordinating Council, a nearly 40-year-old community-based organization (CBO).

“This is a really great organization, we relish working with our CBO partners,” said Jurgens. “This one has done such great work, this is a vital program to help our families remain together and strong.”

Janet Carriere, a member of the board of directors with the Native Co-ordinating Council, said that their main goals are to keep families together, help them become healthier and stronger and to reunite families that have been separated.

“We also support family visits, through the ministry of social services, and we have youth homes that youth can go live in to become stronger and healthier.”

Carriere said that this portion of the funds will go towards recruitment and retention.

“[We want] to get more skilled employees so that we can help more families,” she said..

The organization has about 130 employees so far and deals with a majority of northern communities through the ministry of social services.

The government announced that it would provide $7.2 million to various organizations, including Prince Albert Parkland Regional Health Authority, which will be receiving $103,000 from that amount.
