Track coach aims for success

Feb 7, 2015 | 11:17 AM

From a young age Patricia Taylor had a passion for track and now she is hoping her experience in the sport will help her own team become successful.

Taylor is a coach for the Prince Albert Athletics indoor track club and the Carlton Comprehensive High School track team. She said she was introduced to the sport by a former teacher.

“In grade 7 my gym teacher noticed that I had some ability and introduced me to some coaches in Regina. I became an athlete for Regina Athletics, then I trained and made some teams [which] continued on until I was a part of the University of Regina track team,” said Taylor.

Taylor first started coaching in her grade 10 year and has been hooked ever since.

“The greatest thing about coaching for me is seeing the development of an athlete and seeing them reach their own personal goals and setting personal bests. I get this proud parent feeling and I’m not even a parent, and I feel so good when they try so hard and do so well,” said Taylor.

Thomas Macintosh is a grade 11 athlete who competes in the 800 and 1500 metre races and had nothing but positive comments to say about his coach.

“She always has a smile on her face and is a very positive person to be around, but she also knows what she is talking about when you ask her for advice,” said Thomas.

There are a few grade 12 athletes who have been involved with the indoor track team throughout their whole high school career who want to have successful grade 12 seasons.

“We have a few grade 12 athletes who are training throughout the whole winter in our tack club. We got Ryland Gibb, Kelsey Fenton, and Kristen Gunter,” said Taylor. “Kelsey has been a medalist in just about every year in pole vault, she is still working at that and I expect to see really good things from her in that event. Ryland has been training so hard…and his chances at the Quadrathlon are really good this year at provincials. Kristen’s jumps are also coming along really good and I like her chances at provincials.”

The indoor track teams next meet is in Regina on Feb. 13th.
