Specialty toy store opens in P.A.

A business manager in Prince Albert took his love of toys, like Lego, to the next level.

Lukas Werner currently manages a tire shop, but had the opportunity to make his dream of opening a toy store, a reality.

“It’s something I’ve actually wanted to do for a while,” he said. “We had extra retail space that we weren’t using in the building that we are renting so we decided to go for it.”

March is when Werner, with help, started working on putting together the Kingdom Toys business. Werner said he would have opened the store no matter what, but he is excited they are the only ones selling organic and specialty toys in Prince Albert.

“We tried to get lines that you couldn’t buy in Prince Albert, like stuff that nobody else was selling here just so there’s something different on the market,” he said.

Werner said they carry toys such as plamobile’s, vintage wind-up toys, calico critters, douglas stuffed animals, budkins and more. However, they hope to add new lines as the business expands.

“At this point there is some collector stuff but it is fairly kids focussed at this point just because we have a fairly small location,” he said.

Kingdom Toys plans on carrying more NHL, action figure and baseball player collectibles in the future. Werner said they also want to sell more hot-wheels.

“I mean I’ve met a lot of older guys to that collect hot-wheels, I think it’s just everybody’s got a bit of kid in them still probably that never grows out,” he said.

For Werner toys are more than what he sells, they are how he winds-down at the end of a busy day.

“For sure I go home after a stressful day or whatever and build (Lego),” he said. “It helps me un-wind, better than a movie or something would.”

Unfortunately though, the store hasn’t ordered any Lego yet.

“We haven’t (purchased) Lego yet just because they want a huge commitment,” he said. “You have to commit to … 20, 000 purchases a year.”

Kingdom Toys is located at 293 -17th Street West B #2.
