Enjoy Broadway for a good cause

You don’t need to book a plane ticket to New York — a ‘Broadway’ performance is coming to Prince Albert in November.

The musical fundraiser A Night on Broadway is at the Rivier Auditorium on Nov. 8.

Organizer Michelle McKeaveney called it a unique event.

“We wanted to make it so people didn’t have to travel to New York and Toronto and these fancy places to see Broadway musicals,” said McKeaveney. “They could hear all different kinds of songs from all different types of Broadway musicals all in one evening and right in our own city.”

This event will showcase local talent, while raising money for two worthy causes.

Emma Eaton is performing with the Rivier Academy Chamber Choir as well as individually. Eaton said she enjoys performing but also wants to help.

“It’s very important to me to help the Sisters of the Presentation and also the PJ Party is a very good organization,” said Eaton.

McKeaveney said the sisters need help with a mission school in Huasquicha, Peru, which teaches 230 students.

“That mission school has children ages 3-14, it’s in [great] need of some repairs to make it safe for these students to attend, so we really want to help them out,” said McKeaveney.

McKeaveney has been hosting annual PJ Party fundraisers for four years now and has donated $15,000 to families of sick children in partnership with The Graves and Thyroid Eye Disease Awareness campaign.

McKeaveney said Danielle Carter, owner of 4 Horsemen Fitness in Prince Albert, has helped her host parties in the past. McKeaveney said when she found out about Carter’s daughter, Arabella, she couldn’t think of a more deserving cause.

“We have designated already our profits for our Jan. 30, 2015 PJ Party, which hasn’t even happened yet,” said McKeaveney. “We would like to designate our profits for our next party to kind of help them out.”

Four year old, Arabella Carter was born with Bilateral Microtia and her family is raising money towards a specialized surgery in the U.S. Half of the money raised at the event will go towards the Ears for Arabella campaign.

Eaton has performed in music festivals, school plays and in Broadway North.

“I’ve been acting since I was about seven or eight in school productions and I’ve been singing for the last six or seven years,” said Eaton.

Eaton said her family isn’t very musical but she sees herself performing for a long time.

“It’s something that I I’d like to do for the rest of my life and it’s something that I’d like to pursue as a career,” said Eaton.

McKeaveney said 22 years ago, Darryl Lindenbach and a few of his friends put together a show called Dreams of Broadway. McKeaveney said they are bringing back some people from that show for this performance.

“We’re trying to kind of get some of those old performers, myself included, and Megan Fournier,” said McKeaveney.

There will be 18 acts including new comers from the Chamber Choir and St. Mary’s Glee Club.

“The Night on Broadway is going to be a production with basically local performers singing all of their favourtie Broadway songs accompanied by Paula Fournier on the grand piano,” said McKeaveney.

The doors open at 6:45 p.m. and the auditorium only has 550 seats so you are encouraged to come early to pick a seat.
