New awards to honour Canadians in TV, sports

TORONTO – Canadians in Hollywood have a new shot at awards glory.

The Golden Maple Awards will be handed out in Los Angeles next June to Canucks in TV shows broadcast in the U.S. — as well as to athletes.

The new trophies were announced Wednesday by the Academy of Canadians in Sports and Entertainment.

The privately funded, non-profit organization launched earlier this year to promote homegrown talent in Tinseltown.

Its ambassadors include Kathleen Robertson of TNT’s “Murder in the First,” and Suzanne Clement, a star of Xavier Dolan’s film “Mommy,” which was recently selected as Canada’s entry in the Best Foreign Language Film category at the Academy Awards.

The venue and categories for voting are set to be announced in early 2015.

Winners will be selected by members of the Academy of Canadians in Sports and Entertainment, which include actors, directors, professional athletes and Olympians.
