Toronto FC skipper watching Scottish vote

TORONTO – Steven Caldwell, Toronto FC’s captain and resident Scot, won’t be voting on the future of Scotland on Thursday.

Caldwell, whose home is in England thanks to his earlier club career there, is not on the electoral roll in Scotland but is keeping an eye on the referendum on Scottish independence.

“Obviously I’m watching it keenly and I have a lot of people that who be affected by it — family and friends,” he said after practice Wednesday.

The 34-year-old Caldwell said he’s been excited by the debate and interest that the referendum has generated back home, although not in the Toronto FC locker-room.

“They don’t even really know Scotland’s a country,” he joked. “I think they thought it was just a county in England so there’s not been a lot of debate although we have had some discussions about it.”

Asked for his view, the ever-candid Caldwell said he wasn’t really well enough informed to share. But he said he was impressed by the anticipated voter turnout and was looking forward to the results.

“I know my parents have been watching it closely and they’ve to and fro’d back and forward between Yes and No. So it shows you how close it’s going to be. And I’m excited to see, when the results come in, how we go forward as a country.”
