Ziglo wins ‘another’ Ladies Northern

Jun 8, 2014 | 5:41 PM

As storm clouds loomed over Cooke Municipal Golf Course during the Ladies Northerns finals Sunday, Saskatoon’s Kathy Ziglo alertly put on a rain cover over her cart to shield herself from a potential down pour.

At first she was laughed at, but later it turned out to be a good decision as rain started to pour.

“They were laughing at me because I put on the rain cover at the turn,” said Ziglo. “I said ‘don’t worry girls, we’ll put on the rain cover and it won’t come down.’ Then it went dead calm on the nine tee box and I said ‘we’re dead.’

“By 10, I swear the temperature dropped five degrees and then (the rain) just came.”

Whether or not her preparation to the precipitation had anything to do with it, Ziglo won the tournament with back to back 77’s to win the tournament by one stroke over Crystal Piero (154 to 155).

Ziglo’s last victory at the Ladies Northern was in 2012. She’s won so many, she doesn’t know how many titles.

“It’s only just one right,” said Ziglo. “Everyone’s gunning for you every time you come out. I love this golf course.”

Nadia Gisi memorial

Jackie Packet received the first ever Prince Albert Ladies Northern Nadia Gisi Memorial Spirit Award. Packet, a co-chair of the event, was fighting tears as she accepted the award.

The award is “presented annually to the participant that best exemplifies the spirit of the Prince Albert Ladies Northern Golf Tournament.”

Gisi passed away in November of last year after a battle with cancer. She was heavily involved in golf, especially in the Ladies Northern and the Lobstick.
